MicroCat-BioPOP on the BBC Morning News Show!
Successful use of biological dosing blocks prevents grease blockages in York sewerage
An innovative method of preventing grease blockages in the sewer system has been successfully tested in the city centre of York (UK) over the past year. The trial, carried out by Yorkshire Water in partnership with Cobra Hydro UK Ltd, has resulted in the complete elimination of sewer blockages caused by fat, oil and greases oils (FOG).
The technology uses environmentally friendly MicroCat-BioPOP Bio-Blocks, which slowly dissolve in the sewer system, releasing natural fat-breaking microbes and enzymes. These micro-organisms efficiently break down fats, greatly reducing the formation of blockages and the risk of sewage flooding. The use of this biotechnology is a first on a large scale in the UK.
How do the BioPOP Bio-Blocks work?
The Bio-Blocks are placed directly into the sewer, where they continuously dose microbes that break down fats and oils. This prevents cooled fats from building up and other materials such as food waste and wet wipes from clumping together to form so-called ‘fatbergs’. Such fat plugs can lead to serious sewer problems and in the worst case, discharge of polluted water onto the street or into local waterways such as the River Ouse.
Since the installation of the BioPOP Bio-Blocks in September 2023, there have been no reports of sewer pollution or blockages due to grease in the test area. The blocks are replaced every two months, which ensures a constant and effective bacterial treatment of the sewer network.
Awareness and cooperation with the catering industry
In addition to the technical solution, Yorkshire Water has also focused on raising awareness within the local hospitality industry. Hospitality businesses were actively approached to provide information on responsible grease management and the importance of not flushing grease down the drain. This combined approach contributes to the structural reduction of grease-related blockages in the sewer network.
Positive results and national attention
Kelly Burke, Network Protection Officer at Yorkshire Water, said:
“The trial in York has been very successful. Thanks to the BioPOP dosing blocks, we have not had a single incident of grease-related blockages or sewer overflows in the past year. This shows how effective this biological solution is.”
Clint Jackson, Business Development Director at Cobra Hydro UK Ltd, also confirms the impact:
“Since the project began in 2023, we have delivered a cost-effective and sustainable solution to the build-up of grease in York’s sewers. The results speak for themselves.”
Yorkshire Water’s innovative approach has received national attention. On 11 December 2024, BBC Morning News ran a report on grease deposits in British sewers, showcasing the project as an example of how sewer biotechnology is helping to create a more sustainable, problem-free wastewater system.
