Sediments in Canals, Lakes and Reservoirs.

Importance of Remediation

Sediments in canals, lakes and water reservoirs  are created by natural deposits of organic material such as leaves but also as a result of human activities. This sludge can contain pollutants such as heavy metals, pesticides and nutrients, which affect water quality and biodiversity. Remediation of sediments is essential, primarily to ensure adequate water storage capacity but also to reduce water pollution. By removing sediments, we improve water quality, prevent algae growth and contribute to a sustainable aquatic ecosystem.

However, dredging is an expensive and invasive activity. It destroys life at the subsurface of the water body and releases nutrients trapped in the sediments which can exacerbate algal growth.

Natural & Harmless

Biological Conversion of Organic to Mineral Sediments

Organic sediment layers in waterways can be naturally converted to mineral sediments through biodegradation processes. By admitting microorganisms fixed to a mineral support, they break down organic material, converting carbon compounds and mineralizing. This reduces the sludge layer without physically removing sludge.

By biologically converting organic sludge layers, we improve water quality and reduce land degradation and odor nuisance. This sustainable method contributes to a healthier ecosystem without harmful interventions.

QM Environmental International supplies biological products for sediment remediation. QM-BioDredge is the standard product for breaking down unpolluted organic sediment layers. If the sludge is contaminated with organic contaminants, QM-BioDredge can be supplemented with specifically cultured bacteria capable of breaking down these contaminants. Contact us for more information.

QM-BioDredge

QM-Biodredge is a synergistic blend of natural, nutrient absorbing, mineral and organic matter degrading microorganisms for the treatment of small and large surfaces.

Applications

QM-BioDredge can be used in:

  • Lakes
  • Large & small ponds
  • Girdles and ditches
  • and other slow-flowing waterways.

QM-Biodredge is specifically designed to address organic sludge layers (mud).

Shelf life: 2 years
