Bacteria for soil remediation

Inoculation of bacteria for biological soil & groundwater remediation

Why inoculating soil and groundwater with bacteria is essential for biological remediation.

In biological remediation of contaminated soils and groundwater layers, inoculation with specific bacteria plays a crucial role. These microorganisms are naturally able to break down harmful substances such as oil, fuels, chlorinated hydrocarbons (cVOC’s) and other organic contaminants and convert them into harmless compounds. The targeted addition of bacteria to soil or groundwater accelerates and enhances the remediation process.

Bioaugmentation

Bacterial inoculation ensures that a higher concentration of contamination-degrading microorganisms is present, increasing the likelihood of a successful remediation. Contaminated soils or groundwater layers often do not contain enough of the right bacteria to achieve remediation within a reasonable time. By inoculating the soil or groundwater, we not only increase the concentration of bacteria but also introduce genetic information that can be transferred to naturally occurring bacteria so that they too can break down the contamination.

In addition, bacterial inoculation is an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution. Unlike chemical remediation methods, biological inoculation causes no secondary pollution and minimally disturbs soil structure. The result is a natural and effective remediation that helps restore ecological balance and keep the environment livable.

Soil inoculation with bacteria thus not only makes biological remediation more efficient, but also offers a forward-looking solution for sustainable and responsible restoration of contaminated areas.

Bioaugmentation products can be used for in-situ and ex-situ soil remediation. QM Environmental International supplies both aerobic and anaerobic cultures. The anaerobic cultures, for the degradation of chlorinated hydrocarbons, are shipped live in a 20 L cylinder. The aerobic bacteria are dried cultures that can be stored for long periods of time.

BAC-9

BAC-9 is an enriched microbial consortium of Dehalococoides mccartyi to fully convert PER and TRI to ethylene.

Dehalococcoides mccartyi (D. mccartyi) are specialized “strictly organohalid respiring bacteria,” and are limited to their reductive dehalogenation activity with their use of chlorinated and brominated compounds as their terminal electron acceptor and depend on hydrogen as an electron donor (10). This bacterial species does not use fermentation or other known energy metabolism mechanisms. D. mccartyi are anaerobes.

Applications:

  • In situ remediation
  • Breaks down the following contaminants anaerobically:
    • Tetrachloroethylene (PER)
    • Trichloroethylene (TRI).
    • Dichloroethylene isomers (cis- & trans-DCE)
    • Vinyl Chloride (VC)
    • Freon 113
    • Mixed plumes containing 1,1,1 & 1,1,2-trichloroethane
    • Dichloroethane isomers
    • Tetrachloromethane
    • Chloroform and bromide compounds
      • Tetrabromethane
      • Bromoform
      • Ethylene dibromide
      • Bromoethane

BAC-9 is a microbial liquid with concentration of 1011 CFUs/Liter and enzymes.

BAC-9 is shipped in 19-liter soda pressure drums. In case a larger volume is needed, BAC-9 is concentrated to a factor of 10 to reduce shipping costs. BAC-9 is shipped overnight directly from the factory to the customer in a refrigerated container. After receipt, BAC-9 can be stored under refrigerated conditions (4° C) for up to 3 weeks.
