Electron acceptors

Stimulation of aerobic degradation

Aerobic degradation of organic contaminants such as petroleum products requires the presence of an electron acceptor. In locations where installation of an air-sparging or bioventing system is not possible, QM Environmental International can provide a solution with its products.

Adding electron acceptors in soil and groundwater is useful in biological remediation because it stimulates the breakdown of contaminants by microorganisms. In biological remediation, bacteria and other microorganisms convert pollutants into harmless or less harmful components. This process occurs more efficiently when sufficient electron acceptors, such as oxygen or sulfate, are present.

Electron acceptors

How do they work?

Electron acceptors act as “receivers” in the respiratory processes of the microorganisms. Without these acceptors, the microorganisms can function less effectively or sometimes not at all. By adding electron acceptors to soil and groundwater, we create an environment in which microorganisms thrive better and their natural decomposition processes can occur more quickly and completely. This can significantly reduce remediation time and lower the cost and impact of remediation, contributing to more sustainable and efficient remediation of contaminated sites.
