Fat breakdown

MicroCat® products

The disposal of animal and vegetable oils and fats presents a significant challenge for food producers, municipal governments and water boards. When fats and oils enter sewers, they can cool and solidify. This often leads to persistent blockages in sewer pipes and pump wells at businesses, in municipal sewers and sewage pumping stations, and at sewage treatment plants (STP’s). At food manufacturers, grease separators are essential to prevent grease from ending up directly in the municipal sewer or in the company’s wastewater treatment plant. Inadequate maintenance and overloading of the grease separator can still cause problems in the wastewater treatment plant or downstream municipal sewer and STP.

Preventing fat blockage

MicroCat®

QM Environmental International’s microbial grease-degrading products offer a sustainable and effective solution to these problems. These products contain specific microorganisms that break down fats and oils into harmless components such asCO2, water and new bacteria. Regular use of these products can prevent blockages in drains and company sewers, and keep grease traps at food producers functioning better. In addition, they reduce the likelihood of grease build-up in sump pumps and sewage pumping stations, which helps prevent breakdowns and emergency interventions.

QM’s microbial products not only reduce the risk of a clogged sewer or sewage pumping station or a company’s clogged drain system, but also contribute to environmentally friendly grease management. This is a smart and sustainable choice for businesses and governments that want to combine efficiency with care for the environment.

QM products for grease degradation in sewage systems are used throughout Europe by water companies and governments. Some examples include;

  • Amsterdam
  • The Hague
  • Rotterdam
  • Zoetermeer
  • Delft
  • York
  • London
  • Helsinki
  • Munich
  • Brussels

MicroCat® -BioPOP

The MicroCat®-BioPOPs consist of a slowly dissolving carrier of a biodegradable biopolymer, in cylindrical form, containing 9 different strains of bacteria, at a high concentration, selected for their fat-degrading properties. The cylinder is contained in a durable porous net. They have been developed to prevent the accumulation of grease in water bodies (grease trap, pumping station, sewage pumping station, buffer tank, etc…). They are placed and held in place with a rope or chain. The MicroCat®-BioPOPs contain environmentally friendly and safe naturally occurring microorganisms and their enzymes. The microorganisms are specially selected for their properties to break down (not just dissolve) fats and other organic contaminants found in wastewater from kitchens and the food industry, as well as household wastewater.

The MicroCat®-BioPOPs are available in 6 different sizes so that an appropriate size is available for every system and wastewater flow rate.

Applications:

  • Food industry with fat accumulation in;
    • Sewer Pipes
    • Pump wells
    • Buffer tanks
  • Municipal sewer pipes and sewage pumping stations.
  • Sewage treatment plants

Shelf life: 3 years

Germ count: 4x 10+9 c.f.u./gram (c.f.u. – colony forming units)

In the United Kingdom, the MicroCat®-BioPOPs is represented by Cobra Hydro UK

On our practice reports page, read more about successful field applications of the MicroCat®-BioPOPs including a video from BBC Morning News from Dec. 11, 2024 showing the application of the MicroCat®-BioPOPs in York, U.K.
