Negative Effects of Algae Growth
✅ Oxygen Deficiency in Water
When algae die and decompose en masse, bacteria consume large amounts of oxygen. This can lead to fish mortality and disruption of the aquatic ecosystem.
✅ Formation of Toxic Blue Algae
Blue algae, cyanobacteria including the Planktothrix agardhii, develop strongly in eutrophied waters with a temperature of between 20 and 30 degrees. Thus, blue-green algae development occurs mainly in summer. Blue-green algae produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. Contact with contaminated water can cause skin irritation, stomach upset and health problems in pets.
✅ Cloudy Water and Less Biodiversity
A thick layer of algae blocks sunlight, reducing the ability of underwater plants to grow. This reduces biodiversity and disrupts the habitat of fish and other aquatic animals.
MicroAktiv® Products.
To effectively deal with algae growth in surface waters, removing the nutrients that algae use is the most effective way. Chemical control, if still allowed, is a temporary solution because it kills the algae but does not remove the cause. QM Environmental International supplies microbial products aimed at removing nutrients from the water, reducing the amount of nutrition algae have and, therefore, their ability to develop.
