The influx of nutrients from agriculture, industrial wastewater discharges, calamities such as car/tank truck accidents and illegal discharges cause surface water to become polluted. Surface water pollution poses a serious threat to the environment and can lead to excessive algae growth (eutrophication).

Surface water pollution, algae growth and water bottom problems: an environmental problem

Eutrophication is caused by excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, from agriculture, industry and sewage. This suffocates aquatic life, lowers oxygen levels and kills fish and other aquatic organisms. Water bottom problems also play a major role: polluted sediments contain heavy metals, pesticides and other harmful substances that affect ecosystems for long periods of time. This impairs water quality and makes recovery difficult. Addressing both surface water and sediment pollution is essential for a healthy and resilient ecosystem.
